Switzerland’s world-savvy schools, including international schools, made David ready for the world. In high school, David sat tests for English, German, French, Italian, and Chinese languages, and later completed elementary courses in Latin. He also learnt the local Swiss-German dialect from both sitcoms on TV, and, more importantly, with his daily interactions with locals, including neighbours.
瑞士的遠近聞名高度國際化教育系統，包括國際學校，爲馮琰踏入全球社會做了充分準備。在高中時，馮琰完成了英文、德文、法文、意大利文、中文等多國語考試，並之後完成了基礎拉丁文課程。同時，他從電視及居住地鄰居及夥伴學到瑞士德語。
From Inlandschweizer to Auslandschweizer

David was naturalised as a Swiss citizen in summer 2000. Originally, he wanted to return to Zürich in 2004, after a short 4-year BEc course in Beijing. The Chinese capital unexpectedly winning rights to host the Summer 2008 Olympics kept him there, turning him from an Inlandschweizer (local Swiss) to Auslandschweizer (Swiss abroad), but his Swissness remained — he was the sole Swiss-German voice in local radio promotions around Games-time. And on Swiss National Day 2008, he travelled, for the first time in China, on a very Swiss mode of transport: railway trains. Today, he is the sole Swiss member of a group of language specialists in high standing in Beijing.

Today, David remains one of the more noted members in the Swiss community as the Swiss citizen with the most railway miles in China, and has been featured on Swiss and other global media. He is part of associations on the ground in Beijing about Switzerland, and is planning new Swiss-centric projects. He has written also for Switzerland-centric sites including Newly Swissed.
而如今，馮琰繼續作為在華深度參與的瑞士僑民之一，其在中國搭乘鐵路列車里程可能為全中國瑞士第一名，並曾見於瑞士及海外媒體報導上。他加入了許多瑞士相關組織，並正準備更多瑞士相關安排。此外，他亦為瑞士本土媒體撰寫內容，包括 Newly Swissed。
